BIRDWATCHING AND WILDLIFE IN GAMBIA
The Gambia is home to over 550 different species of birds, so it’s no wonder that it has become one of the top destinations for birdwatching. If you love animals, make sure to visit one of its wildlife sanctuaries such as the Abuko Nature Reserve, Bijilo National Park, Kachikally Crocodile Pond and the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project.
Visiting any of these sanctuaries is a great way to support local wildlife preservation and sustainability efforts and to gaze upon some of these beautiful exotic animals with your own eyes.
BEST GAMBIA BEACHES
Take advantage of cheap all-inclusive package deals in many of Gambia’s beach resorts. Kotu beach area is a newcomer that’s well equipped to offer everything you would expect from an all-inclusive package holiday. You’re always going to be close to a white sand beach in Kotu and if you’re after a bit of golfing action you can visit the Fajara Golf Club for a round or two.
For a more seasoned beach destination head to Kololi. You’ll find Gambia’s tourist strip (Senegambia) there with plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs to spend some time in. Kololi is also in the vicinity of Bijilo National Park where you can enjoy nature trails – especially good for exotic birdwatching.
CRUISE UP THE GAMBIA RIVER
You can go on a boat tour in the Gambia River, which can prove to be a really one-of-a-kind experience. If it’s not already included in your all-inclusive holidays to Gambia, ask your hotel for brochures with recommendations for boat tour operators.
You can expect to see things such as the UNESCO Heritage site Kunta Kinteh Island (formerly James Island) and Baboon Islands, which are inhibited by many different types of monkeys, hippos and even crocodiles.
