City breaks to Amsterdam
Explore the cities canals

There is something about the canal belts of Amsterdam that just makes you feel like a regular tourist. The cobbled lanes, colourful houses and boats bobbing on water all seem to create an atmosphere right out of fairy tale land!

The best way to experience this side trip into escapism would be by taking one (or more) day trips outside city limits during either summer or winter — whichever season suits your preference better.

It’s sure not going matter because once there burst through any sense drowsiness with delicious Dutch Heinekens at bars throughout town, bright colours everywhere as cyclists zip past their rosy cheeked faces while students shoot each other quizzical looks over pints.

It’s a numbers game

Amsterdam is a beautiful city of numbers, with over 7000 monuments and 160 canals. With so many museums to see in just one city alone — not mention all the other amazing things that you could visit while on your city break to Amsterdam — it would take more than a few days for me to show you everything this wonderful place has going for it!

The best way I have found adventures is at my own pace, as well as allowing plenty time relaxing among its many amenities like parks or adult shops (if they catch your fancy). If these stats intimidate you at first glance don’t worry — there’s no hurry whatsoever once you get started walking those streets.

Old meets new

Traces of the past might be everywhere, but Amsterdam is a city striding into the future at full pelt. Packed with youthful energy, innovative projects and cutting-edge cafés, a holiday to Amsterdam is sure to inspire.

Dine at the top of a pirate radio tower, settle into a deckchair on a fake sandy beach, dance the night away inside a shipping container and explore trippy museums crammed with fluorescent art. Anything is possible in the Dutch capital.

You’ll stumble across something to delight and shock around every corner, making cheap trips to Amsterdam perfect for a shot of eyebrow-raising culture.

Best time to go to Amsterdam

There’s always something going on in Amsterdam, making it a year-round winner for a short break in 2021.

Rocketing visitor numbers over July and August, when schools let out and families arrive with their little ones in tow, make it hard to find cheap Amsterdam trips.

October is arguably the best month to take a book a short break to Amsterdam. As autumn begins to sweep through the city, you’ll find gentle sunshine, fewer crowds, cheaper digs and coloured leaves tumbling from the trees that line the canals. This, together with late spring, is a great time to find Amsterdam deals on hotels, flights and everything else you need for a short break.

Things to do in Amstedam

Roller-skate through the Vondelpark on summertime weekend breaks in Amsterdam, ice-skate along the frozen canals in winter, join the bright orange street party for King’s Day in April or get your rainbow-coloured gear on during Gay Pride in late July.

Every season has a special allure.
